Re: Just curious/survival skills (Was: search & rescue/kicking incident)
I also scuba dive and one of the first things we are taught and is stressed a
lot in this sport is responsibility for oneself. This means not only being
prepared for the unexpected with some basic survival skills and first aid and
survival supplies but to use your common sense to avoid accidents. Granted,
the ocean is a lot more predictable than a freaked horse but what I am getting
at is to minimize your risk.
Such things as tell folks the area you will be riding in and when you are
expecting to be back. Don't ride when weather is extreme (I know, I know,
training and all but you have to ask yourself is it worth the risk). Don't
ride if you or your horse are not feeling well (I mean ill here folks). Ride
with a buddy, especially in remote places and yes, be ready to eat bugs if
necessary but try to avoid situations that would get you into that
predicament. And gosh, sometimes it is good to listen to that inner voice
that says, "Shouldn't DO THAT". And listen to your horse and think things
through when he/she says "Shouldn't DO THAT." They are sometimes right too.
