cannon bone?
<<Hey guys, a week or so ago someone mentioned something about what Deb
Bennet's recommendations are for minimum cannon bone circumference
perthousand pounds. Does any have that in one of their articles or books?
Anybody got it?/ Susan Garlinghouse>>
Got it! It's in "Principles of Conformation Analysis, Vol. I (Fleet Street
Publishing, Gaithersburg, MD, 1990), pages 78-79. Here are two excerpts:
"For the horse species, the minimum acceptable amount of "bone" is seven
inches per 1,000 pounds...
"At the upper end of the range of weights found in domestic horses, the
average figure for horses standing taller than 16 hands, 2 inches, and
weighing in excess of 1,350 pounds is only five inches per 1,000 pounds."
BTW, Deb adds, the term "bone" actually refers to the circumference, in
the live horse, taken with a tape measure around the bone, tendons and
skin at a point just below the knee.
Hope this helps.
