Kat may well answer this too, but so will I. Take the on-again off-again
wonder horse that goes all out and wins every third ride he enters, but he
gets pulled at the other two. Yep, they are out there. He wins your
selection ride and is blown out of the water at the Big Event. Nope, don't
want him on the squad. Sorry.

Ah, but WEC competition IS a team sport--that seems to be the point you don't
grasp. There are all sorts of strategies that don't come into play at regular
rides--like perhaps sacrificing a place or two to pace a team member so that
you both turn in good times, or judging that a competitor is flagging and
rabbiting him so that he wears out and either pulls or falls back, etc. Even
the individuals can help the team effort in this way, and are expected to do
so should the circumstances arise.
