Bearing in mind the recent thread of which is better at finding their way
"home", mares or geldings, I took my 12 yo gelding, Silver, to a very
familiar riding place (we go there at least once a week). After riding
about an hour, I turned him toward "home", dropped the reins and just let
him do what he wanted to do.
Weeeelllll, first he wandered off the trail in the appropriate direction
of the trailer, made two large circles through some low-overhanging branches
and into a forest dead end! He then just stood looking at the trees he
could not get through, and waited for me to give him some direction.
So much for homing instinct in that boy. Give me my mare any day; she'll
get us home no matter what terrain we're in.
