WEG's have been held in between Olympic years since the first WEG
in Stockholm, 1990. My understanding is that both have been money losers.
The Irish were not able to hold on to a sponsor for their event.
1990 was also the first year endurance was held along with the
other disciplines. I assume the other FEI disciplines (3-day, dressage,
jumping, driving, and I think vaulting is still an FEI discipline) will
compete in Rome. This is the first year since WEG's have been held that
endurance will not be a part. It is FEI's decision to make and apparently
the promises and money from UAE swayed them.
Last year's world championship was not an WEG. WEG's have been:
1990 Stockholm; 1994, Holland. The FEI had given the World Championship to
the country that hosted the Olympics in those years when possible (Spain,
1992; USA, 1996).
We will see how this plays out....
