Robyn, I have two mares that are Aladdin granddaughters. One is very quiet
and the other is as you describe. Let me tell you, when I first started
working with her, I tried to give her away more than once and no one would
take her! Well now I wouldn't sell her for anything. It has taken alot of wet
saddle blankets and acceptance on my part that sometimes you pay a price for
an athelete, but today we are a team.
As far as keeping on weight...how old is she? My mare has become more
substantial now that she is almost 10 but will always have the build of a
marathon runner. I find that feeding alfalfa hay (even a little) does put on
weight BUT it really hypes her up (even more) so I can't feed it. Instead, I
have been using oil or rice bran, probiotics, lots of good grass hay (coastal
bermuda), and now I am trying the daily wormer (to soon to tell). I know as
she has settled in (that took awhile!), she doesn't burnup as much with
nerves. There are also homeopathic remedies that have been VERY
helpful----arsenicum in particular, but you need a good homeopathic vet to
guide you with that.
Mostly, though it has just taken time. She has a great heart, loves to go
down the trail and nowadays is just a blast to ride! hang in there. You may
have a diamond in the rough.
