Alan, I always try to condition 2/3 the distance before a ride.
If I have been conditioning over a 25 mile run and my horse is
tolerating it well then the next time I may pick up the pace. If the
horse is doing fine with that then our next ride may be 30 or 35 miles
but then I drop down to a slower pace than i did the last 25. Never add
speed and distance at the same time.
I'll be doing a 50 mile ride here in a month and will work up to a
minimum of 35 miles before then. Now this is what has worked well for
me and each rider and horse is different. If you always condition only
up to 20 miles then do a 50, your horse may hit a wall at that point.
good luck, Alan
