As one of the people who posted negative anecdotal experience with Strongid
C, I feel I have to respond. I acknowledged in my first post that there
were no solid research data implicating Strongid C as the cause for reduced
performance. On the other hand there are no solid data to confirm that it
has no effect. The problem is that the concern is about long-term effects:
unfortunately our personal experiences are the only information available
on long-term effects.
Everyone agrees that daily wormers have no acute toxic effects. My
gelding, like many others mentioned on this list, initially had a nicer
coat and held his weight better after I started using strongid C. It took
3 years for any suspected problems appeared. Trisha mentioned that the
chemicals in daily wormer are fed to children, but I wonder how many
children got the stuff every day for 3 years!
I know of no laboratory studies that have looked at strongid c effects on
horses administered Strongid-c daily on a long-term basis. This would be
difficult research because of the cost of maintaining horses in a
laboratory situation for 3+ years. A laboratory situation might never tell
the story, anyway. Problems with my horse didn't crop up until he had run
50 miles; the rest of the time he was apparently fine.
Until definitive research on long-term effects has been completed, I will
not be feeding Strongid C to any of my horses.

P.S. It took 30 years use to understand the effects of DDT on eagles,
falcons, and pelicans. The first reports of problems were merely
anecdotal, but they were later confirmed by solid research. Mounting
anecdotal evidence should be the basis for more intensive studies.
