We currently have 3 geldings; we just purchased a mare pony for our son. My
wife tells me we have to keep the geldings and the mare in separate pastures
so I have to put in some additional fensing. Why is this? and is it
necessary?

Well, I don't know. We have always ointroduced our mares to our rare
gaeldings with no trouble. Just like any animal, introductions must be
cautious, simply because the anmals are strangers. Indeed, we had a couple of
mares who, when not inseason or with foal at side, were stables routinelynext
to our breeding stallion, with jjust 4 rails of pipe between them. There is a
social parameter to consider, and with this in mind, unless you have a
particularly obnoxious individual, I don't see why you need to separate them
on a permanent basis. Let me know how you do.
