Prior to last Monday this ride would have had long stretches of trail where
the riders wished for some trail water for their horses. Four days of hard
rain changed that. This ride could be used for the prototype of a new
sport - Ride and Swim. Several years ago I rode these trails after (and
during) heavy rain and my 16-2 hand horse swam a few strokes. Hopefully,
the riders with 14 hand horses carried snorkles.
The ride day was sunny and cool and there were very few metabolic problems
as a result. And needless to say there was plenty of trail water for the
horses to drink.

The 100's sent out at 5:00 AM on a 22 mile road loop and they did the same
road loop (except with a vet check at mile 11) for the last loop. This
early start kept most of the riders from having to do much of the woods
trials in the dark. One interesting fact, I did all the P&R checking at
the 100's on their 22 mile check. Three horses blazed the first loop (flat
hard packed roads) in 1 hour 45 minutes. The next horse was about 30
minutes behind. I told the timer to write down (so I could say I told you
so later) that the only horse out of the first three that would finish the
ride was Bud Davidson's. The other two were pulled - one at 57 miles and
the other at 78 miles. It was very clear that too much was taken out of
these horses the first 22 miles.
The 55 was won by a race at the finsih.
