Best Method for Snow/Ice Riding?

Getting ready to start up my horses for this year and I was wondering
what some of you use for riding on snow & ice. I am looking forward to
many more months where the trails around here are icy and have deep snow
in places. (I know, I am crazy.) In the past I have used borium on
Dutch keg shoes with snowball pads. This is what I will probably go
with again unless anyone has a better suggestion. Winter riders around
here go shoeless but I am afraid of wearing down my horses' heels. What
is working for other riders?
Thanks,
