[endurance] lame/ride tomorrow

Hello,
My horse has been lame at the trot on a hard dirt road for a few days,
but fine on the trail. (No, I haven't been riding him lame, just to see
how he was doing). Today he seemed fine. Tomorrow we are supposed to go
to a competitive trail ride (novice) but I am worried that even though he
seems fine now that it is too soon to stress him and he might go lame
again. I don't know what caused the lameness, if he continued lame I
would have taken him to the vet soon to find out. He was lame on the
front left, would go fine and then start bobbing his head and taking some
bad steps, then seem fine again.
Probably, I should just skip the ride to be on the safe side, which is
what I've just about decided. What would you all do? He's never been
lame before, was shod about 3 weeks ago, and (unfortunately) we haven't
been riding as hard as usual for this time of year. I thought about maybe
going to the ride, having the vet check him before entering, then keeping
an eye on him and pulling at any sign of trouble. But then, why chance it?
