The following article was published in a local Huntingdon paper:
LOCAL RIDERS DO WELL
Mary Coleman of Cassville and Paula Ayers, Dennis and Kim
Bookhamer and Lauri Wilson, all of Huntingdon, completed the 7th
Annual Leo S. Glass Memorial 25-Mile Competitive Trail Ride on
Saturday, April 27, 1996, at the Glass-Hicks Farm East of
Huntingdon. 36 riders, from all over Pennsylvania as well as New
York, Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia, braved the cold wind
to start the ride early Saturday morning. The weather didn't get
any warmer but the horses loved it. Three horses finished the
ride with scores of 100%!
Mary and Lauri rode again on Sunday, April 28, to complete
the 5th Annual Betty E. Glass Memorial 25-Mile Competitive Trail
Ride. Another local rider was Sharon DeCoursey of Petersburg.
34 riders started Sunday's ride. The weather was warmer and the
horses' scores reflected that! The highest score for Sunday's
ride was a 99%!
A competitive trail ride is not a race. It is a judged,
paced, timed event. Riders on these rides had a minimum time of
4 hours 40 minutes and a maximum time of 5 hours 10 minutes to
complete the 25-mile course. The horses were examined before the
ride by the veterinarian Beverly Anderholm of Centre Hall and the
judge Marie Walker from Maryland. They also observed the horses
while out on the trail, at the halfway point, and again after the
ride was over. Halfway through each ride each horse's pulse and
respirations were taken and they were trotted in hand to check
for soundness. If horses are in any sort of distress at this
time, they are not allowed to continue the ride. After the ride
the horses again have pulses and respirations taken and are
carefully examined by the judges. Most of the horses used for
this sport are Arabians, but any sound horse can compete and do
well if it is properly conditioned! Dedicated riders spend
several hours per day several days per week training and
conditioning their horses and themselves. There were Arabians,
grade horses, Morgans, Tennessee Walkers, Appaloosas, a Racking
Horse and a Paso Fino at these rides. The rides were run under
the rules of the Eastern Competitive Trail Ride Association. All
horses started with a score of 100%; points were deducted for
various things.
The rides were hosted by Bruce and Betty Hicks and Mark and
Lauri Wilson of Blue Moon Stables, east of Huntingdon.
The top 18 horses on Saturday's ride had scores of 98% and
above and were: Louise Bower on Winston, Dee Dee Driscoll on Sir
