Hi- On Saturday I took my 17 year old Arab mare who I'm (re)training and
conditioning out on a trail ride.I haven't done much with her in several years
due to some lameness and my other horses. The weather was gorgeous and I just
wanted
to take it slow and walk most of the way. We went places that I haven't gone
in years becuase my other guys are not so dependable by themselves on the
trail. Missy is not afraid of anything and she's always eager to go. I wanted
to see if she was beginning to listen to my requests for walk or halt and she
was. ANyway we walked through fields and farms and through creeks and 10 foot
high underbrush area with narrow trails cut through and lurking turkeys which
she didn't see :). I wanted to avoid coming back through a neighboring farm
because they have 2 mean dogs who run loose, so I took us down past there
looking for a way through the multiflora roses - Missy just stopped and said
I was being crazy and a woos and we should just go back through the farm. SO
we did. Turned into the field and staying on the edge, we ran for it.
I was attempting to slow her to a canter but since I was laughing she didn't
take me seriously. We did slow to a walk at the next field due to swamp and a
major puddle. Missy found the pass through to my place. Only problem was
that it was covered up with giant evil multiflora rose bushes! Yikes- well we
both took one gulp and I sat up as straight as I could and let the reins go to
the buckle and we dove through to the sound of ripping cloth and the sting
of ripping skin (on me not her thank goodness). Continued in a very excited
way with loud laughter on my part back through the woods to the barn where
I found several holes in my shirt and lots of ugly scratches on my arms
and stomach. Walked Missy out and hosed her legs and cleaned her up and she
went back with her buddies.I had a fantastic time !!!(went back later and cut
