Well, I'm not going to Prineville. Special tied up on me today. It
wasn't really bad, and she will be ok. But it was bad enough, and pretty
scarey. So I have some more questions about tying-up...
I was really stumped because I warmed her up really well, and gave her
less grain last night (like I'm sposed to). The vet thinks it was caused
by a couple of different things; being in heat?, not enough selenium, too
long of lay off with not enough excercise.
Anybody have any experience with mares doing things like tying-up when in
heat? The vet said to keep close track of her cycles and if she continues
to have problems when in heat she might need Regumate. I can't give
Regumate to a horse competing in AERC rides can I?? She colicked when in
heat too. Are some mares just prone to this?
I'd like to hear some about ride scheduling vs. layoff time & excercise.
We did the 30 miler 2 weeks ago. I would have preferred to wait a month
till her next ride, but really wanted to do Prineville. So I laid her off
for 1 week after the ride (I've been told this is best). She had new
shoes on Sat., Sun. she had a -very- light ride (just around the house).
Then, I've been told, that it's best to give a horse the week before a
ride off, with a light ride at the end of that week. So today (thursday) I
took her out. The plan was about 8 miles of trotting and some cantering,
with a nice long warm up. If that had gone well, than I would have ridden
her lightly Friday afternoon, after we got there. Should she have had a
light ride at the end of last week, with a regular training ride over the
weekend?? What do other people do as far as time off?? What about when
you're doing rides 2 weeks apart?? I would prefer 1 month between rides,
but sometimes that doesn't work. When you all give your horses time off
before or after a ride, do you lay them off -totally- (just on pasture)?
Or do you lunge them or do other in hand work for light excercise??
I'm going to give her vitamins to her regularly from now on to make sure
she's getting enough Selenium. I was afraid she was getting too much, so
I layed off it for a little while. I asked the vet if we need to do blood
work, but she didn't think it was necessary. Should I insist? Or just
give her time on the vitamins, and hope it's ok??
Also, I've heard that a horse that ties-up once or twice is prone to
tie-up again. The vet said that there's a series of injections that she
can give if Special ties-up again. Anybody know anything about these??
Thanks!! Sorry this got so long....
I hope everybody who's going to Prineville has fun, and a great ride!
