Howdy!
I'm new to this mailing list; having joined about 3 weeks ago. I've been impressed with the quantity and quality.
I'm glad to hear there's at least one or two Thoroughbred fanciers out there. Arabs have certainly proven themselves in the sport of distance riding. But I love TBs and will always ride one.
My older TB is a 16.2h, large boned gelding. He has no trouble cooling at all. In fact at a ride last summer where the temperature was 100 and the humidity about the same he did great. Most of the other horses had very high resps and were panting but Kintyre's were 20 or less. His resting pulse is 32, he trots at around 90, and you have to gallop him hard up hills to get his pulse above 160. All of his gaits are long, smooth, and efficient. He doesn't shy and will do anything I ask.
I think the bottom line is "you've got to love the one you're with". When you spend as much time with your horse as we endurance riders do you need to have one that is compatible with your personality. You can own a horse with all the talent in the world but if you don't get along with him and enjoy him you're not going to be very successful in the long term. Thoroughbreds meet that requirement for me!
Don't forget; Fred is 1/2 TB
