My grade horse had colic surgery last August. This year we completed three
endurance rides: 2 50-mile top 10s (including one at your Mendocino ride where
he finished with all 'A's) and his first 100-miler at Davenport.
He had surgery at Pen Eq - the same place as your daugher's horse. To make a
long story short - Lucca cut his leg on some electric fence that came down in
his field; we put him in a stall to try to minimize his activity and keep
his new stitches in place, and he coliced within 24 hours. After a week of
oil-and-water, the vet finally recommended surgery. (The vets never did agree
on the cause.)
Moral of the story: there ain't no such place as a bargain stable.
(Two months later, Garrod's STILL didn't have their electric fences repaired.)
