Re: [RC] Cannon bone measurements - Don Huston

Hello D'Arcy,

Yes all 3 are Arabians.

I did not check knees today but before and after I trim them I stand them on a concrete slab to check legs and lateral balance and hairline angles to make sure I have not done something obviously wrong. All 3 will stand square and all 3 toe out slightly. I will do the plumb line thing next time.

Don, I don't want to assume they are all Arabians.  Therefore, could you clarify their breed?  Great measurement job.  Now, were you able to draw an imaginary line centered from the knee to the fetlock?  Was the knee centered to the center of the hoof?  If not which way did the knee turn in or out and on what horse and what breed?

Okay I measured my 3 horses. They have all been barefoot for the last 7 years and are sound on all footing. The 13yo, Datezz my current endurance horse, just completed Warner Springs 50mi barefoot, "mostly" no boots. "Mostly" because for the first time in 3 years of gluing boots I had total glue failure. It was a sealed tube fresh from the wrapper but over a year old so maybe that was the problem. After the first 6-7mi all 4 boots were off.  We were 48 out of 71 and pulsed down to 56 within 1-2 minutes at 3 vet stops and 60 at the finish. The other 2 were retired from endurance because of "mental problems".......mine! I wanted to slow down and relax. Datezz is a big lazy lumox that will walk while the others run off ahead. Suits me just fine now as a 66yo.

Datezz 13yo 16HH 950lbs
Long easy trot
Stretches out at the canter
Loves to stop
8.5" cannon
18" elbow to knee
11" knee to fetlock
4.75" wide hooves

Indy 25yo 15HH 850lbs
Short powerful trot
High rpm hoof pounding canter
Loves speed, refuses to relax
8" cannon
18" elbow to knee
10" knee to fetlock
4.5" hooves

Yoshi 20yo 14HH 725lbs
Flowing extended trot
High rpm hoof pounding canter
Loves speed, will eventually relax
7.5" cannon
16" elbow to knee
10" knee to fetlock
4.25" hooves
