Re: [RC] LD and 50 Mile Horses - Differences? - Laney Humphrey

I once owned a horse that was a better LDer than a 50 miler. His problem was that he loved to go fast but just couldn't do it for 50 miles. He'd poop out at about 25 if allowed to go as fast as he wanted to. He and I fought our way through many 50s, including some multi-days. Maybe I just wasn't the right rider for him but I got tired of having my arms pulled out of their sockets fighting to make him go slow enough to last for the entire 50 miles. I sold him to someone who also loved to go fast and loved LDs. Perfect match!

This is a retry post. First didn't come up.

What characteristics/build/muscling/stride characteristics/etc make for 50 mile plus horses vs the LD horse?

They need to be owned by someone who is willing to ENTER them in a 50. :-)

Actually, I see very few LD horses that I wouldn't try a fifty on. There may be a few who just seem to have the sort of metabolism that predisposes them to obesity, or tiny little feet that short stride, but to be honest, I wouldn't ask those horses to do an LD either. When you get right down to it, if you're the sort of person who can hike 7.5 miles and enjoy it you can probably hike 15 miles. I think that's about the same as 25/50 to them. 100's are more of an exclusive group and you need a pretty good horse and a lot of commitment and attention to detail to pull that off.

I think riders are more the limiting factor between 25 & 50 than the horses are. A rider can be a much bigger hindrance to a horse over the course of 50 miles, and a poor rider beats himself up more than he can stand over the course of 50. Not saying there aren't a lot of good horses & riders in 25's, just saying those could do 50 and it would not be any big deal to them.
