Re: [RC] Off the Beaten Path - Elyse Carreno

I really enjoyed Merri's entry "Off the Beaten?Path" It's one of the best things about riding, and?specifically endurance I think-this adventure of traveling and discovering. Last winter I was riding an all but erased trail that clearly no one had been down in years. As I rode on I found my self up on top of an embankment with no way down. As I looked around and took in the shape of this earthen?"structure" I realized it was an old military fortification of some sort. After?further exploring I found an old rusty NPS sign that said "Fort Sully".?Research that night told me I had found an old civil war artillery redoubt. ?And it brings back another memory of riding in the Shenendoah National Park a few years ago with some friends. We decended down the side of the mountain and happened upon an old apple orchard, many years neglected and forgotten, but all the more beautiful for it. I always tell people the most beautiful things I have ever seen have been from the back of a horse.
