My favorite Uncle was a surgeon at St Anthony’s hospital
in Denver, Colorado he told me to never get on a motorcycle! He said he was
sick and tired of trying to pick helmet pieces out of people’s heads. I
live in the NW corner of Missouri and in my area there have been many motorcycle
deaths and no horse related deaths that I know of. It is a law in MO to wear a
helmet but I still see many riders in flip flops. We have had two very serious
motorcycle accidents where I work in the last two years. These are people that
use the proper PPE (Personal Protective Equipment). I very seldom see another
horseback rider when I ride with a helmet on.
Shannon who took his advice and have never been on a motorcycle,
and do wear my helmet when I ride my horseJ

Um, I have worked in some of the best hospitals and those
are not the typical injuries we see. You mostly get drugs and the things that
go along with, like stabbings and shootings. Lots of car accidents (by far the
most common), not very many chainsaw injuries and I have seen one horse riding
injury in 17 years. Of course I don't live in the country, so that is going to
be the driving force of what you see in the ER. Unfortunately we see LOTS of
child and domestic abuse. These things far outweigh any sports injuries. Skiing
is probably the biggest recreational injury.
Where you live dictates what you get in the ER. I am an
advocate of sports and keeping healthy, so I'll take the risk, and yes, I
always wear a helmet.
