[RC] Horse Addicition - Bruce WearyI know what you mean, Kat. It all started when I heard a voice over my shoulder whisper: "Pssssst! Hey Buddy! Wanna buy a horse, cheap?" He assured me that it wouldn't be addictive, that I could just dismount and walk away anytime I wanted. Yeah, sure. Easy to say. Thirty years and several thousand dollars later, and what have I got to show for it? Oh sure, physical fitness, a sense of accomplishment, great memories of doing 100's with our daughters, an enhancement of appreciation for the great outdoors,.........I could go on. But just think of the TV shows I missed, the afternoon naps, the honey-do lists I could have tackled. It's too painful. I tried to quit, but I gained a lot of weight. I knew I had a problem when I found myself often riding alone. Sometimes I would lie and tell my friends I was going golfing, but then I'd sneak out to the barn. I knew I had hit bottom when I bought a stick horse to ride when my horse was laid up for some reason. I was out of control. I tried taking up smoking instead. Then I got addicted to those darn things.I got off the cigarettes by using the patch. I got off the patch by smoking cigars. I got off the cigars by smoking crack, so I'm pretty much tobacco-free now. It's just one day at a time now. Instead of a pack-a-day smoker, now I'm a ride-a-month horseman. My doctor says I'm lucky. I could have been a NASCAR freak instead. Way harder to treat. (That one's gonna piss of a few people.:>) Thank God for small favors.
