Re: [RC] Injured Horseman lucky to be alive! - Dawn CarrieWe're fortunate to have good cell service with the carrier we use over about 80% of where we ride (we lose it when we go down into the creek bottoms) due to there being a tower nearby. But when I ride alone, I carry my cell phone in my camelbak, and always tell my husband which trail I'm going to ride. He knows how long it takes to do each one (he rides too), and where we usually park for each one, so if I don't show up, he'll know where to look for me. And the horses know where the trailer is, so would probably end up there if they left me. One always stays with me if he dumps me (you're a sweetie, Bear!). The other looks at me, shrugs as if to say, "my work here is done" and leisurely trots off. I can generally stop him by crinkling a granola bar wrapper if I have one. <G> Didn't have one once, though, and he ended up back where we usually park. But I'd parked at the alternate spot, so he was wandering around in circles, frustrated. My husband was jogging along the gravel road that evening and found him...Ross was wondering where the little snot had left me, when I came trudging out, cussing like a sailer, after a 2 mile walk. <G>

and Bear (I would never leave Mom)
and Sundance (whatever...)

We have landmark names for all of our trails and connections, so he knows exactly where I am planning to go and how long it should take to return. I never go anywhere other than where I said I was going. And....I always wear my helmet! Not that it alone will save me from injury, but it's a start....
