[RC] If You are Lost - Deirdre C. MonroeThis is in response to the question about getting hurt and being out of cell coverage. Yes, HAM radio is an option, but there are pros and cons. You typically need line-of-sight to a receiver. If you do not know what that means then you are 1) not a HAM and 2) may not want to become a HAM.There are alternatives to consider. REI offers a satellite-based personal locator. Check it out at http://www.rei.com/features/spot.html. It seems to be getting great reviews and has simple 911-type features. You can also "check in" and send messages to friends by e-mail that show your location. I have thought about using this myself and probably will buy one. Check it out. We have alternatives. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
