We have one horse that will get scratches from time to time on his hind
feet (both white). Scratches are caused by a micro organism that sits
somewhere between a fungus and bacteria. This organism is normally on
the skin as it lives in the soil and when the skin is broken from sun
burn, drying out, etc., it gets in and causes the problem. These types
of organisms do not grow well in an acidic environment which explains
why scratches is more of an issue in the soils of the arid West which
tend to be alkaline than in the east where the soils can be acidic.
I asked our vet one time about scratches and he said the only thing he
has found that will treat it is a rose fungicide made by Ortho that
goes by the name "Captin" (sp?) mixed in a half vinegar. That made
sense since a fungus does like acid to start with.
It works very well on Ego. Mix 2 tbsp into about a gallon of vinegar,
shake wet a paper towel with the mixture, apply the the area and wrap
with vet wrap for about 15 minutes. I do it when they are in to eat. A
couple days and the fungus is gone.
