RE: [RC] [PNER] cleaning hooves? - KathleenI pick my horses feet each time I ride (3-4 days a week). This is mostly to check shoes/coronet bands and hoof growth more than for cleaning them out--they often don't have anything in them. When not riding (during the winter) I pick them on Saturdays and if it is wet I put a drying agent on them to prevent thrush. My horses are on dry lots (which are usually pretty dry) with run ins and irrigated pasture. The "mud season" is usually a couple of weeks when the snow melts in the spring. I don't have any hoof health problems and haven't ever had any on a similar schedule. I have read and heard many times that a horse's hooves should be cleaned and picked out every day. On the other hand I also hear and read some knowledgeable hoof care speakers and texts say a horse's feet benefit, and are perfectly healthy, by not cleaning every day. What do you all think? What do you do with pasture horses, stalled horses, dry lot horses??? ------------------------------------ Join or renew your membership in the PNER.
