Re: [RC] Humble opinions on multi-day rides requested - Barbara McCraryThere might still be a point to point yet, if we had more than 5 entries. After Lavonne Booth dropped Applegate-Lassen point to point 5-day ride, three years later we took up the management, because we loved that ride so much. We had done it 8 times. It was a bit primitive in its way...no lunches, no dinners, no showers. But to ride on a real pioneer trail of the 1840s (and I cannot remember exactly the dates) was a thrill to us...to try recreating the experience through the eyes of the people who traveled before us. We gave historical vignettes each night to inform the riders of the pioneers' experiences, the tragedy and sorrow that followed this trail. We were quite passionate about its history. But when we took a weekend to flag the trail...driving from central coast CA to mid-state Nevada, driving a 4WD pickup on the trail (to drive High Rock Canyon in a pickup is an experience I'll never forget) to flag (it took 2 days), even some hiking where a pickup could not go, and then come home and find no more than 5 entries...such a sad disappointment. We cancelled the ride when that happened and have never attempted it again. I believe we would do it again if we could be assured of enough riders to make it worthwhile...but we cannot be sure of that. So...another point to point gone. I think most riders stopped doing point to points because it is so much easier to drive to drive to a base camp and park there for 5 days. No driver needed, and all the luxuries provided. Not every ride manager can offer that.
