[RC] kicking horse - Sheila_Larsen

Cindy, I am sure you will get lots of posts on correcting/punishing her
for kicking, but depending on your desires instead of punishing her for
kicking, you could try rewarding her for standing and not kicking. However
to do that you have to be able to set up the situation and have the time to
work with her. Of course, I am an advocate of clicker training but if you
didn't want to go the whole clicker routine, you could just try giving her
treats when she is good. You could start with her feet (but this is where
using a click is beneficial because you can click put her foot down and
give her a treat and she will understand the click was what you are
reinforcing) when you pick them up and she stands click/treat and continue
to do that until you can increase the amount of time between click and
treating. Then you could do the same with a hammer. Just remember to
increase things in tiny increments so she can succeed. However, you may
want to make sure that your farrier isn't holding her leg in a different
manner than he used to, my mare can't have her rear leg up to high.

It would be the same technique for horses being near to her. Start with
horses from a distance and when she is good give her a treat and have them
get closer and closer, if she kicks you have gone to far, just ignore it
and start again from a point where she is comfortable.

If you have any specific questions, email me if you want. And yes once
she has the behavior down you can stop treating but working with your horse
this way can open doors in your relationship with her.
