I presently have the Airowear vest with zipper in the front and velcro to adjust the sides. I don't know what the name of the model is. It is very comfortable and jsut takes getting used to like a helmet. I always wear very breathable shirts underneath - I never feel too warm, even in the summer, but you do sweat underneath it just the same. So something that is quick drying and moisture wicking is great.

 

I had a Tipperary vest - it was certified, so maybe check in more detail with the company. I don't remember all the details, but I know that I would not have bought a vest that was not certified.  They have different models and the different models are certified to different levels. The one I had was solid (without the small individual blocks), so a little stiffer, but it was certified at a higher level than the one with individual blocks. You can move better in those ones but apparently there could be a chance of something getting in (and hurting you) through the spaces in between the blocks...which can't happen if the vest is made of one solid piece.

My vests seem to last at least two years before getting really grungy and material starting to rip. Cleaning them is the main issue. Can't really throw them in the machine as that can rip the fabric, but spot washing is not always enough.

Either I'm missing part of this article, or the author wimped out.  He makes a couple of points, but then doesn't provide any evaluation of the trial vests he said he was supposed to evaluate!  What's with that?  

About the only things I got from this article are that:

a)  Not all vests are certified.

b)  The most popular (Tipperary) is not certified.

c)  The certified vests are less comfortable that Tipperary, but complaints go away after rider gets used to them.

Not the best evaluation article I've ever read.
