Re: [RC] Spam from roxvet at aol dot com - Diane TrefethenI have gotten one private email from someone who opened one and got infected with a virus. DO NOT OPEN THESE EMAILS! When malicious emails infect a computer, they immediately scan the computer for other email addresses, copy them, and send themselves out to every email address they find. They usually do *NOT* use the email address of the infected computer in the "From:" line. They use one of the email addresses they find on the infected computer. That's why when you get one "from" someone you know, that someone's computer isn't necessarily infected... unless they got the same email with YOUR "from" eddress and opened it :( This ability to send themselves out using email addresses other than the one on the infected computer is called spoofing. The virus spoofs the email address for two reasons: 1) A lot of the computers it sends to will recognize the eddress and maybe think the email is real and open the email and 2) It is harder to back trace to the computer that is really infected because IT'S eddress is not in the "From:" line. So NEVER open an email that looks even a little bit odd. Instead, write an email to your friend and ask if s/he sent you the email. Or if the thing looks really odd... just delete it.
