[RC] Girth Rubs - shermanTitle: MessageI read/heard about
several instances of this whenever the horses are growing/shedding the coats, so
spring and fall. I have a couple of my own horses that are seasonally prone to
the rubs. I also went to a tube type girth, the waffle PVC, and haven't had a
rub in a couple of years, EXCEPT, when I didn't use a crupper on a new horse
that had no wither and is narrow thru the girth area AND we climbed up and down
hills for three hours. After the crupper was added (I also need a saddle that
fits him better) he hasn't had a repeat. I also sometimes use a sheepskin type
wool fleece girth cover that also protects the girth area very nicely. The
reason I prefer the PVC waffle girth is that practically every time I use the
wool fleece it gets full of burrs and foxtails.
I don't know of
anyone who has ever shaved the area. I would be concerned that it would be too
sensitive and now unprotected. I'd be more inclined to change girths. Is your
fleece girth the thick tube type of cover and is it wool fleece or synthetic,
and is it a flat girth with fleece where it touches the horse? If it's the flat
type, maybe the edge is still too rough? Just a
thought.

Have any of you ever shaved behind the elbow of your horse to prevent rubbing or pulling on the hair? My mare has lots of folds behind her elbows and recently we are getting some galling where my girth is either rubbing or my mohair girth is pulling her hair out. I switched to a fleece girth but I never had a problem with any rubbing all summer but the last two rides I have had major problems . I was wondering about shaving behind her elbows as maybe it is her winter hair coming in that is the problem ? My saddle is not moving back to front to cause it ?I have tried stretching her legs forward after cinching , I have used show sheen and baby powder with no luck . I do not ride with a tight cinch at all. I would like to go to Moab and ride more than one day , Any idea's ? Drin Becker Mtn Region
