I think both riding bareback and without holding on with the reins are good for balance. I learned to balance by riding a chronic runaway with a roached mane. I did have reins but they were no special advantage. I learned to ride without reins much later when I tried a bosal on my (fairly) well-trained horse. The bosal is so severe that it is impossible to use except as a final straw, so to speak. But, frankly, I credit my bareback experiences with giving me the balance to ride without reins. All that being said, I agree with Kat that riding without reins is important and probably safer in a round pen. I also agree with Diane T. that all of this is better learned before falling off results in lots of broken stuff.
