I prefer geldings but I have to say the best horses
I ever owned for endurance were mares. Santee was my first mare. She
was very opionated, leaped across trail to offer a kick to anyone who wanted to
pass, but she was tough. My next mare was Maggie. She too was
opionated but the best horse I have ever owned for endurance. I should
have had her when I was younger and had more energy. I managed to get her
to MI 6000 miles. Her recoveries were awesome plus she took care of
herself. I figured we had a love hate relationship. When I gave her
away cause I could no longer hang on to her spooks, I was given a fatlinger
(arab haflinger cross). Wren is very stocky and very opionated. But
if I ride her right, not too fast, she gets the job done. I would have
never chosen her for this sport, LDs now, but one does not ignore a gift.
I don't need a stepstool to get on her, she is steady, she has great ground
manners (all my mares did, okay so did the geldings), and I can still sponsor
juniors. Speed is no longer the issue, being able to ride is a must.
So I would not say no to a mare. Jeanie
