I've had similar feelings about it when we had our little outbreak at Lightfoot years ago, and my horses were not even infected. I was REALLY on the borderline about getting my horses vaccinated while there were active infections on the ranch. When one of my horses had pigeon fever, the only literature that I could find on the internet were articles from Colorado which advised extreme sanitation measures. My vet here in California are really lax about it and said we really shouldn't even bother to quarantine a horse with diagnosed pigeon fever because the bacteria is endemic "in the ground" here. It really can make one crazy trying to decide how over-reactive we need to be! :) K.
