Re: [RC] Strangles in SE region - Kathy Mayeda

Angie, it seems like you have a pretty good grip on reality here about
strangles! I've had similar feelings about it when we had our little
outbreak at Lightfoot years ago, and my horses were not even infected.
I was REALLY on the borderline about getting my horses vaccinated
while there were active infections on the ranch.

When one of my horses had pigeon fever, the only literature that I
could find on the internet were articles from Colorado which advised
extreme sanitation measures. My vet here in California are really lax
about it and said we really shouldn't even bother to quarantine a
horse with diagnosed pigeon fever because the bacteria is endemic "in
the ground" here. It really can make one crazy trying to decide how
over-reactive we need to be! :)
