RE: [RC] Ride holds - paulRE: Duck Rides and NC being apples and oranges. The XP rides have a reputation for being laid back. An NC is usually more adrenalin filled. So if we look at ride times we should see a big difference right? This years Mt Carmel XP .Day #1) first four riders finish in less than 5 hours. 83 entries/82 complete 55 miles on Day #2) 4 come in under 6 hours. . 66 out of 66 complete Day #3) 4 finishers under 5 hours. 59 out of 59 complete Somehow they seem to do all right with just one hold. Several of the top horses did this more than once at this ride. Other XP rides show simular nmbers. So what were the ride times for the first four NC 50 milers? What was the completion rate? Any big difference? It seems more like different kinds of apples, but not apples and oranges. Again. Has any actual research been done to show that extra holds of a stated time are better for the horses? If horses do indeed benefit from these extra holds, shouldn't we have four or five holds or even more in a 50? Somebody used the analogy of a baseball pitcher taking breaks between innings. This is true. But what happens when there is an extended delay, (like from rain) especially later in the game? Does that pitcher come back out after a 45 minute cooling off period, or do they have to bring in a new pitcher? Why? Because the muscles get too cool after that long of inactivity and cramp up. Football has one long break in the middle and two other very short breaks of a couple of minutes. ( sounds like a one hold ride with two gate and go checks:-) Paul N.
