You have come to the right place. I had a severe tibial plateau
fracture in November of 1997. Quote from the operative report: X-rays and CT scan show a severe
depressed lateral tibial plateau fracture with a comminuted proximal
fibula fracture. The extent of the damage though even with the CT scan
did not compare with the actual findings at the time of surgery with
large fragments of the articular surface jammed about two inches down
into the tibia and being separate and loose. I also tore all the ligaments and fractured the fibula. My knee
was dropped about 2 inches. and the whole thing looked like a jigsaw puzzle. They jacked up the knee and put in 5 bone
grafts to hold it and then plated and screwed the whole thing together with 2
plates and ten screws. I was off work for 9 weeks and in a wheel chair
for longer than that. (I am a klutz with crutches.) August 5 of 2000 I rode a 30 miler just to make sure I could stay on that long. Later that month I did the Eastern High Sierra Classic 50 and rode with Karen Chaton and Weaver. Karen, Trilby and I galloped the last 2-3 miles to barely make the cutoff. My knee still does not bother me much other than the arthritis from being older.............mb
I was in a car accident (at least, for the sake of my
marriage, not a horse wreck this time) in May, two surgeries, two plates
and 12 screws, 12 weeks non-weight bearing and now in the third week of PT
without “assistive devices.” I’m looking for words of wisdom
(preferably encouragement J) from
anyone who has returned to distance riding after recovery from a tibial plateau
fracture. Thanks!
