RE: [RC] Alfalfa Hay/Pellets - paulHi, First... Have his teeth checked and worked on by a vet who is good at dental work . I will bet another quart of fermented mare's milk he has points on his teeth that are cutting ulcers in his mouth. That may also be why he refused some of the grain rations you tried. Here is how you tell if a vet is good at dental work. If they just take a file and wave it around the front teeth and say the floated them, they probably aren't. If they sedate the horse crank the mouth wide open, they probably are. Second. He might have stomach ulcers. This is less likely given the symptoms you described, but worth considering. Now...If a idle horse is a hard keeper and finicky eater, it is just my opinion that this horse is not an endurance prospect until you fix that problem. Once you fix it, it may take a few months to get over it and gain the weight needed. I wouldn't worry about the hay or pellets deal until I figured why he is that way. Paul N.
