TSHWANE UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY

IN THE DEPARTMENT

ANIMAL SCIENCES

Dear Sir/Madam

My name is Ivona VAN TONDER.  I am currently a second year student doing a three year course in Equine Science at the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) in Pretoria , South Africa .  We have received an assignment where we need to research the endurance riding discipline.  I want to make the assignment more practical and decided to contact people who participate and have experience in this discipline.  I have already researched the basic things of endurance riding but I need more specific information on the tack and training programmes people currently use, and behavioural problems that are being experienced in this discipline.

I would like to know which specific tack you make use of and why.  In South Africa the use of synthetic tack has just started but the advantages and disadvantages of this tack hasn’t practically been established yet.

I further would like to know, which specific training program you currently find to be the most effective, for yourself and your horse, at the level that you are competing at.  (Beginner or championship level).

Please also advise me what behavioural problems you are experiencing when training or competing your horse for endurance rides, (not horse vices like crib biting and box walking).

Any information in the above - mentioned regard would greatly assist me with my assignment.  I would like to use your information as an interview of a current practical, example referring to the source of the information.

Kind regards

Ivona van Tonder
