Re: [RC] Katys' Mongol Blog - Barbara McCraryYes, likely fermented. When we were in Mongolia in 2007, I thought at first that fermented mares' milk was alcoholic (someone told me so.) But apparently it isn't, and I later drank some. It is deliciously SOUR, more so that the sourest buttermilk you can imagine. I happen to like sour, so I was fine. I can picture the gastro-intestinal distress of the riders. Some of our group had this problem, but I thought it might have come from Beijing, China, where we spent a few days before flying to Ulaan Bataar. I was very fortunate, as I was not afflicted. As for taking pit stops along the way, as described in a previous post, there is literally no place to hide out on the steppe, other than a shallow depression in the ground. We all hid behind the bus, or went out in tall grass. All in all, I figured, "You've seen one, you've seen them all." So what's so different about everyone else? Endurance riding goes a long way to dispel modesty.Mutton is just mature lamb, and stronger flavored, and I love lamb. I might have gagged on the boiled testicles of just about any animal they raise there...sheep, goats, yaks, reindeer, cattle, horses. After all, it's just another piece of meat, but the association is rather a put-off. I would have loved taking that adventure....
