Re: [RC] Boots for "Emergencies" - Dream WeaverThe boots are recommended to use over a bare foot, and for optimum performance that is the way to go since they were designed for a bare hoof. I was just saying that I've seen riders with shod horses using Renegade strap ons over shoes and they loved them for endurance rides. My guess is that Kirt would still recommend them for use on a bare foot for the best results but may not have known that they have also been shown to work well for over shoes for additional protection, or for a spare. The boots can be pretty versatile. I"ve been able use three different sizes of Renegades on the same horses hooves and get them to work and stay on just fine simply by adjusting the toe straps. Some horses can be harder to fit which can make it more difficult, that's why anybody using boots of any kind really need to fit and ride in them ahead of time to make sure everything works. Too many times I've seen riders lose a shoe or a boot and they either don't have a spare, or don't have one that actually fits or has been adjusted for that horse. The spare boots I carry are always used and broken in. I also always carry two boots. That way I have one to lend out, and another one to use in case I need it. If my horses were still shod and knowing what I've seen in person at rides I wouldn't have any trouble choosing to carry a Renegade as a backup or spare - just because I know how quick you can change them out, on or off. The main reason I use the boots now is because my horses move so well in them, the captivator is designed to allow the joints to move naturally without constraint, and my high mileage horse has better recoveries with them. I got a ton of compliments from friends and vets on how well Chief moved in Renegades after I started using them on him last October. If the inventor of the boot does not recommend it's use as a "spare tire", then that probably makes the decision for me. It was my top choice though, in addition to the Easyboot Gloves, which also seem simple to put on, and high quality. But with the Gloves I am concerned that the tight fitting boot will be more affected/damaged by rough walls caused by a lost shoe. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
