[RC] Antelope Butte Ride - Drin Becker

Well anybody who did not make the Antelope Butte ride in Shell WY this last weekend missed a great ride . It started out bad as Friday night before the ride we were all camped at the Antelope Butte ski area which I am guessing is around 8500 ft.in elevation and at about 1:30 in the morning I hear horses stampeding thru camp , open my trailer door and here come another set of horses at a dead run . A moose had come into camp stampeding one electric fence with two horses in it which in turn took three more electric fences down with a total of 8 missing horses . Half the camp spent hours looking for horses and we finally caught 5 of the 8 horses and had to give up on the other three until daylight came. At first light people were out looking on four wheelers and the remaining 5 starters(me included) of the 50 and the 12 starters on the 25 all took lead ropes with us in case we would run across the missing horses. Luckily the 3 horses were found that afternoon with just one having some minor injuries. Our group of five 50 milers decided that since we were all tired from being up half the night we thought it would be fun to just have a nice ride day and all stay together and enjoy the trail . At a couple miles out mis-fortune again hit and Sue Lykes horse stepped on something hidden in the meadow and punctured his sole so she had to lead him back to camp. The remaining 4 of us , Dorothy Sue Phillips , Lisa Cook , Marlene ? from Germany and I all rode together all afternoon riding the trail, the Antelope Butte ride is on part of the Big Horn 100 trail and is spectacular , country that puts Yellowstone to shame on beauty , waterfalls, high mountain trails that give you views for 100's of miles in all directions , meadows, and wooded trails that are just awesome . 50 miles on good horses with good friends in country that is unbelievable , it just doesn't get any better than that . The four of us crossed the finish line holding hands with smiles all around . The Tolman's put on some great rides , you cannot get any better food than they fed us at the ride, Bar-B-Que hamburgers, scalloped potatoes, baked beans, all types of salads, cheese cakes, brownies, sodas, water and than for breakfast before the ride they cook you up pancakes , bacon , eggs, it is unbelievable food that is all home cooked. So any of you that are thinking about doing these rides in the mountain region don't put them off next year , come and join us and see for yourself what I am talking about.I live about 8 hours from Shell WY and would welcome anyone who would want to layover here at my place on the way out to the Big Horn or Antelope Butte , I have corrals and riding out my door , invitation is open and hope to see a bigger turn out at these rides next year.
