Certainly some of the snakes were obnoxious, but most seemed to just want to sun themselves on the trail. I rode over the top of one without realizing it - my horse took a really big step and kept going, I heard the rattler and looked. I don't know how many times my dog passed very close to them with no problem - it wasn't til we moved here that he got his first bite (and it was on the leg). They call them Mojave Greens, and they are said to be the most venomous of all rattlesnakes. We don't have that kind on the central coast of CA. I'm not sure just what variety we have here.
