We all know about putting water on the horse to help bring the pulse
down, right? Well, Via hates having water put on him, even when it's
hot. So when we put water on him his pulse will spike, then drop
quickly when we stop. Go figure.
(I'm hoping he'll change his mind about that after he has some more
experience.)
The old Jbird has been at this for 13 years. He will not drop until his
saddle is removed. He's not "off the trail" until I take the saddle
off. It doesn't really matter how hot or cold it is his pulse will hang
until the saddle is dropped - even if it means putting on a blanket.
Drop the saddle - the pulse drops. Yes they are individuals.
With him and eating his pulse drops while eating. Take food away and it
spikes. I was doing pulse at a ride a few years ago. A very experienced
rider brought in a horse. They took his hay bag away and brought him in
- he was high. The crew who had been at this sport a long time looked
perplexed when I showed him my monitor that read 72. He took him out
and came back in a few minutes later - same thing. The next time same
thing. I told him to get his hay bag. He did and let the horse start to
eat - 48 on the pulse. So you just never know.
