[RC] Emergency Locator Beacons - k s swigartMerri Melde said that Karen Chaton said: What about the emergency beacons? They will need fresh batteries too. An emergency locator beacon only uses power when you turn it on, and you only turn it on in the event of an emergency.?? But the general rule about using them is that you don't unless you have a real emergency; and when you do...you stop moving so that even if it loses power between the time you turn it on and the time people find you, that they know where to look. Yes, it would be a good idea to ensure that it has fresh batteries before heading out, but you don't need to keep replenishing them. Most batteries have a longer shelf life than two weeks if you don't use them (for the ACR PLB, which is one manufacturer, the warranteed battery life is 5 years).? And since they are specificly designed to be used in the case of dire distress, they are pretty ruggedly constructed so as to remain functional even under very adverse conditions (like if they get wet). You can find the specifications for one of them at: http://www.acrelectronics.com/microfix/MicrOFixspec.pdf kat Orange County, Calif. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
