[RC] Stocking up - Bruce WearyTo clarify--stocking up is indeed different than a wind puff. An new and acute wind puff is of concern because it is almost always trauma based. In stocking up, the fluid isn't trapped, but rather is lingering in and around the tendon compartment and held there by gravity (called dependent edema) and will be carried away with exercise as long as there is nothing else wrong in that leg. As Truman mentions, "old and cold" wind puffs are usually permanent and of little concern if the horse has proven that they aren't made worse with work. It's the new wind puffs that I was saying should be paid close attention to until they are either gone or reason they have appeared is understood and treated successfully. Even so, if I had a choice between two horses that were identical in all ways--ability, soundness, talent, and tolerance for work--but one had wind puffs and the other didn't, I would choose the one without the wind puffs.
