Re: [RC] cougars and wildlife - Barbara McCrary

How fascinating! Badgers are rather rare to see, I think.
I had a wonderful experience on Applegate-Lassen multi-day ride some years ago. Lud and I were managing it and one morning I was driving along a dirt road, not too far from a couple of ranches. There was a barbed wire fence along the edge of the pasture, a few feet from the road. All of a sudden, a Pronghorn Antelope ran through the pasture, jumped the fence, and ran alongside of my truck on the road margin (10-12 feet wide?) for at least 1/2 mile or more. Then, just as suddenly, he turned, jumped back over the fence and ran off. I was stunned! I have always wondered what he was thinking and why he did that. He didn't seem afraid...it was more like "I'll take you on for a race." When he'd had enough, he left.

I love all my wildlife encounters.

Barbara

Maybe the best thing about getting stupidly and badly lost on my most recent 50 was the series of wildlife encounters.
Wiid and I were both thoroughly demoralized at my stupidity and were trotting along a hot, dusty road when up pops a badger. I've lived in badger country all my 53 years and have previously had only a fleeting glimpse as the fat little buggers dive back into their holes.
This time, the badger popped out of the grass and ran beside us in the field, along the side of the road, for a good half mile. It's just a guess, but she must have been hoping to keep us away from her babies.
What a tremendous display of courage, to watch this valiant animal take action against a much faster and larger, albeit less ferocious, beast.
I decided not to finish the ride - the extra miles would have been too hard on Wiid and me. But I will always cherish that moment.
