Re: [RC] Thanks -alfalfa-free diet for mule - Kathy MayedaThe only thing about COB is that it can contribute to gastric ulcers. When you are eliminating the alfalfa, you are taking away some of the buffering calcium, so maybe that may be a concern. I haven't bought COB in years. My gut feeling though is that your mule will be tougher in the stomache department than my Beau! K. I use cob sometimes, mostly at rides or conditioning rides, not too much, just to jumpstart their appetite. And sometimes just plain crimped oats, or LMF Performance (they make it for grass and alfalfa diets). Never much. At home and on long conditioning rides, just a couple of cups, but at 50s and 100s I get more generous with it. Usually Sonny will only eat a couple of cups at a? time, even at rides, then some hay, then more grain or LMF. Is there hope that eliminating the alfalfa will help with Walker's allergies? That would be wonderful! Kathy Thanks (belatedly) for all your good advice for putting my allergic mule on an alfalfa-free diet.? He’s now getting orchard grass hay with a small amount of COB w/molasses, and he has tapered off the Prednisolone.? Too soon to tell how successful we will be.? At the moment we’re stuck in Las Vegas on the way to the Mt Carmel XP ride … with a broken trailer axle! … good grief!? Hopefully, we’ll be on our way soon. And since there’s so much discussion about feeds, supplements & grains, I’m curious who uses just COB?? I settled on it since I used to have good success with it in the past, it doesn’t take much of it, and it seemed so uncomplicated!? At the vet checks, he gets grass hay & water, his COB w/molasses with cut up carrots & apples.? Any opinions about that? =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
