Re: [RC] So why do they put it in their "high protein" feed? (was: yucca illegal? etc.) - Elizabeth Walker

That occurred to me too, but I don't know the answer. I just reported what was on their web site. One guess would be that there are folks out there (though probably not on *this* list), that feed their horses the 14% High Protein, plus alfalfa hay....

The yucca isn't added for its anti-inflammatory action. It is
added because it will bind with ammonia in the large intestine,

 From their web site:

"One of the most common feeding errors is over-feeding protein. A small amount of protein is converted to energy, but much of the excess protein produces high levels of ammonia in the large intestine. Ammonia absorbed into the blood inhibits performance due to increased joint unsoundness, abnormal electrolyte balance, decreased immune response, and poor energy metabolism. The yucca extract binds with the ammonia and passes it out through the feces without allowing absorption into the bloodstream and subsequent release through the urine. "

And this from Triple Crown's website about their 14% Performance Formula (added roasted soybeans to increase the protein content):

"A well balanced "sweet" feed designed for horses with specific protein needs, especially broodmares, yearlings, foals, and performance horses who typically eat grass forage... "

This product also contains the yucca that they claim is added only to fix the "common feeding error" of "over-feeding protein." Seems a damned silly thing to be doing to me...sell a high protein feed that has something in it to "bind" to the by-product of "excess protein" and have it be passed out in the manure.

They could, of course, just put less protein in the feed...that solves the feeding excess protein problem as well.

This just doesn't make any sense.
