RE: [RC] Yucca in horse feed - illegal? - Kristen A FisherMost breeds and disciplines that compete under USEF Rules are subject to the Therapeutic Substance Provisions (GR410-412). The Endurance Discipline is subject to the No Foreign Substance Provisions (GR 409). http://www.usef.org/documents/ruleBook/2009/03-general%20rules.pdf -----Original Message----- From: ridecamp-owner@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:ridecamp-owner@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Elizabeth Walker Sent: Tuesday, May 05, 2009 4:02 PM To: Ridecamp Subject: Re: [RC] Yucca in horse feed - illegal? Just to complicate things, it turns out that yucca is allowed by USEF - I was curious, so I sent off an email. Their reply is below. While AERC doesn't need to operate under USEF rules, what about endurance riders in FEI rides? Or is that yet another set of drug rules? ------- Dear Elizabeth, Yucca is permitted under the Therapeutic Substance Provision of the USEF Drugs and Medications Rule. The yucca is in a vitamin/mineral/probiotic additive that is manufactured by AllTech (2010 WEG sponsor), and is added to all of the Triple Crown feeds to provide a balancedvitamin/mineral profile. So - Triple Crown Senior, Lite, and alltheir otherfeeds have it in them. Withholding it means that you have to change your horses diet to an all-hay diet the week before, and during a competition, which isn't practical. (I find it ironic that the company that is sponsoring the 2010 WEG makes the product that Triple Crown adds to their feed, and which contains an AERC banned substance.) I'm not sure where I got this information, but I rememberthat Yuccaclears from the horses system in three days. Someone elsemight havegood information on this. It's not on the list on the AERCsite thattells how long compounds remain detectable. Steve On Tue, May 5, 2009 12:27 pm, Elizabeth Walker wrote:Evidently. I contacted Mellisa Ribley about it, as I recently switched to Triple Crown. (Didn't even notice the yucca until it got pointed out.) According to the answer I got - Yucca is on the prohibited substance list, as it has anti-inflammatory properties, and there isno way to tell how much of it is in the feed in a non-FDA approved feed. "The recommendation is to use these products/feeds with caution during competition as it is the rider/iownersresponsibilityas to what is present in the horse during the time of competition." I haven't contacted Triple Crown yet, though someone else reported that their rep said it "wouldn't test". The yucca isn't added for its anti-inflammatory action. It is added because it willbind withammonia in the large intestine, and be excreted in the manure, rather than in the urine. From their web site: ---- One of the most common feeding errors is over-feeding protein. A small amount of protein is converted to energy, but much of the excess protein produces high levels of ammonia in the large intestine. Ammonia absorbed into the blood inhibitsperformance dueto increased joint unsoundness, abnormal electrolyte balance, decreased immune response, and poor energy metabolism. The yucca extract binds with the ammonia and passes it out through the feces without allowing absorption into the bloodstream and subsequent release through the urine. A beneficial side effect of reducing urine output of ammonia is air quality improvement. This reduces irritation to the horse's respiratory tract and reduces complications with air passage disorders. ----- This one just irks me, as I don't like the idea that a drug rule would discourage or prohibit me from buying a horse feed that I thought was the best value / quality / what have you, formy horse.Gee - maybe we ought to ensure that we only allow our horses grass pasture and water, as that is the closest to a horses "natural potential". Oats, high-powered grains, fats, electrolytes- all ofthat enhances our horses competitive ability, too!
