[RC] pterygium - Lynn WhiteI've been busy with my husband who has been having the procedures done to remove the pterygium from his eyes. If you don't know what this is, it's kind of a growth on the eyes that is a result of constant eye irritations from sun, wind, and/or dust. They call it "Surfer's Eye" in California. Anyway, it's preventable by just protecting one's eyes when outside. I highly recommend the prevention idea. This can not be removed via laser surgery: it has to be done the old fashioned way with a scalpel, grafting, and sutures. Some doctors will use the "glue," but the jury is still out with regards to this. Now for the $64K question: Can horses get this? Since we ride our horses when the sun is at it's most intense, the dust is blowing, etc., is this something that a horse can get over several years of competing? If so, can it get to a point that their vision is affected? Just curious. Now get out and ride: and wear your sunglasses! Lynn P.S. If you ever have this done, make sure you leave the surgery facility with adequate pain meds. Ibuprophren probably won't help much the night of the surgery!! =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
